白姓 : HAKUSHO

2014年、21_21 DESIGN SIGHTで開催された展覧会「コメ展」に出品されたドキュメンタリー作品です。

「白姓」とは「百姓」に一つ足りないという意味の言葉で、映像に登場する小林康生氏の造語です。

小林さんは、「百姓は百の仕事をすることできる尊敬すべき人のことで、とてもなることのできない人。自分はせめて“白姓”になれ たら」と謙遜されます。

日本の中世史研究が明らかにしたように、「百姓」とはもともと多種多様な手工芸を含む、自然を扱うさまざまな職種 を表す言葉。

でも、もともと「農」をなりわいとする人々は、イネや作物を育てるだけでなく、自ら道具をつくる工芸家でもあり、水路や里山の森を絶えずメンテナンスする環境調律者でもありました。

コメづくりや農業がこうした職能と生きかたの「全体性」を回復しうるとしたら・・。

一見あたりまえの風景のなかに、コメびとたちの深い叡智を探ります。

This movie is created for Exhibition “KOME : The Art of Rice” 2014 at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT.

For those who made agriculture their livelihood, they not only cultivated rice plants and other crops, they were also artisans who created their own tools, and environmentalists who never ceased to maintain the waterways and woods. Alas, if only rice harvesting and agriculture were capable of repairing the“totality”of these occupations and the way of living. We explore the rice people and their deep wisdom within the landscape, which at a glance would be taken for granted.
